

The economic strand uses material from the history strand to deepen understanding of economic concepts.įrom Health and PE to Visual Arts and Music, 4th grade students broaden their love and understanding of healthy lifestyles, culture, arts and humanities. In the civics/government strand, students learn about concepts and rights contained within our founding documents. The geography strand emphasizes the influence of geography on U.S. Students begin the year learning about the French and Indian War and end with the Reconstruction period. Students continue with year two of a three year study of United States history in which all four strands (history, geography, civics/government, and economics) are integrated. Through careful observation and data collection, students build scientific understanding and critical thinking skills. They also investigate ecosystems and the nature of stars and our solar system. Students explore a variety of topics including forces, light and sound. Earth, Life and Physical Science are studied throughout the year, allowing students to formulate an understanding of how the world works based on investigations and experiments. Science in fourth grade centers on a hands-on, student-centered exploration of our natural world. Critical thinking, math reasoning, and problem solving help students to apply and explain strategies that they learn to real-world math experiences. Resources such as Cuisenaire rods, geoboards, and protractors are used to conceptually understand the mathematics that they are learning. Students increase their knowledge in the geometry domain by investigating angles and basic geometry terms. Students engage in shared reading and writing experiences, small-group guided reading, and independent reading and writing opportunities.įourth grade students extend the concepts of multiplication and division from third grade, as well as begin the understanding of operations with fractions and the introduction of decimals. Students compose informative, narrative, and opinion pieces. They engage in understanding literary and informational texts and using grade-level skills to become proficient and expressive readers and writers. *Programming available varies at local schoolsįourth grade students are immersed in reading, writing, listening, and speaking throughout their day.
